Chicago's busiest days are also its hardest days to get around. This guide covers the big event seasons and how to plan rides around street closures and demand spikes.
Chicago hosts something almost every week. Most of the time, that is great. But when a festival closes streets in Grant Park, a convention fills the South Loop, and a game lets out at the same time, getting a ride becomes the hard part of the day.
Event dates and footprints change from year to year, so always check the official schedule for your date. The patterns below stay the same.
Summer festival season
Summer brings Chicago's biggest outdoor festivals, many of them in and around Grant Park. Big festivals close nearby streets for days, and pickups near the gates get crowded and slow.
- Book early. Festival weekends fill vehicles fast.
- Set a pickup spot away from the gates. A few blocks away is faster than the main entrance.
- Book hourly for long days. The car stays nearby and moves when you do.
Convention season at McCormick Place
McCormick Place is the largest convention center in North America, and big shows fill downtown hotels and the South Loop. Taxi lines and rideshare zones back up at the end of each day.

Sports across the year
Cubs and White Sox games fill the summer, the Bears own the fall, and the Bulls and Blackhawks run through the winter at the United Center. Postgame traffic is the worst part of every one of them.
